Winter Comforts and Fire Risk: Stay Safe This Season

winter fire risk

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s tempting to cosy up with heaters, candles, and festive lights. But with winter comforts comes an increased fire risk. Now is the perfect time to refresh your fire safety habits at home and work.

Check Your Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work. Take a few minutes to test them. Press the test button to check the sound. If it doesn’t work, replace the batteries or the alarm itself. Make sure there’s an alarm on every floor of your home or workplace.

Use Heating Devices Safely

Portable heaters are a popular choice in winter, but they’re also a significant fire risk. Keep them away from curtains, furniture, and anything flammable. Never leave a heater unattended, and don’t use it to dry clothes. If you’re using open flames like candles, always extinguish them before leaving the room.

Inspect Fire Extinguishers and Exits

At work, now’s the time to review fire safety protocols. Are extinguishers accessible and in good condition? Is every exit clear and well-marked? Don’t wait until there’s an emergency to find out something’s not up to scratch.

Be Cautious with Festive Decorations

Fairy lights and festive decorations add a cosy touch, but they, too, can present a fire risk. Use lights with a safety mark and check them for frayed wires or damage before plugging them in. Switch them off before you go to bed or leave the house.

Stay Prepared

The best way to prevent a fire is to stay vigilant. Taking these simple steps now can save you from a disaster later. Whether at home or work, make fire safety a priority this winter.
