Coping with Redundancy: Staying Positive

Coping with redundancy is an experience many of us may face or have faced in our careers. It’s a challenging time filled with uncertainty and, for some, a hit to their self-esteem. However, it’s crucial to remember that being out of work is not a reflection of your worth or capabilities. Instead, it’s an opportunity to reassess, rebuild, and perhaps even redirect your career path. Here are some strategies that helped me cope with job loss, and I hope they can do the same for you.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

The first piece of advice is perhaps the hardest: stay positive. Losing your job can feel overwhelmingly negative, making it difficult to see any silver lining. But maintaining a positive outlook is essential during these times. It’s important to remind yourself that this period can offer a chance for growth and new opportunities. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on your career and what you truly want from your work life.

Treat Job Searching as Your New Job

Feeling inferior or less valuable because you’re not employed is common, but it’s a mindset you need to shake off. To combat these feelings, I treated my job search as my new full-time job. This approach helped me maintain my self-esteem and work ethic. By dedicating regular hours to job applications and interviews, you’re not just waiting for opportunities; you’re actively seeking them out.

Embrace the Experience

Job loss is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, going through such an experience can be incredibly formative. It teaches resilience, adaptability, and the value of perseverance. People who’ve never faced job loss might not have had the chance to develop these qualities to the same extent. When interviewing for new roles, don’t hide your experience of job loss. Instead, discuss it openly and focus on the lessons learned and the strengths you’ve developed as a result.

Have a Plan

Feeling out of control is common after losing a job. Creating a plan can help you regain a sense of agency. This plan might include daily job application targets, skills development, or even exploring new career paths. Having a strategy helps mitigate feelings of despair and keeps you focused on the future.

Maintain a Routine

Keeping a routine is vital. It gives structure to your days and helps you manage your time effectively. Ensure you’re not only applying for jobs but also taking care of your well-being. Exercise, hobbies, and social activities are just as important and can provide a much-needed break from the stress of job searching.

Manage Your Emotions

Job loss can evoke strong emotions, from anger to sadness. It’s crucial to manage these feelings constructively. In my experience, focusing on long-term goals rather than immediate reactions was beneficial. Let your future success be your motivation and your form of ‘revenge’ against the circumstances of your redundancy.

Consider Your Next Steps Carefully

This might also be an opportune moment to reassess your career goals. Have you always wanted to start your own business or change career paths? Now could be the perfect time to explore these options. Use this period as a launching pad for new beginnings.

Job loss is undeniably tough, but it’s not the end. It’s a chance to rediscover your strengths, explore new opportunities, and perhaps even change course towards a more fulfilling career. Remember, it’s about moving forward, not dwelling on the past. Keep your chin up, maintain a positive attitude, and who knows where this journey will take you.
